THE SECOND ONE (EL SEGUNDO)
At midnight, in the solitude of the countryside, Alcira receives an unexpected visit from a young recruit who has been wounded in a nearby combat. As she tends to the soldier's injury, Alcira discovers that he was involved in the crime that took her grandson’s life years ago as part of a system of extrajudicial executions carried out by the military to inflate the number of casualties in Colombia’s fight against insurgents, a phenomenon popularly known as “false positives.”
Blinded by rage and grief, Alcira sees in the corporal’s vulnerability of the soldier a golden opportunity to take revenge and do justice in memory of her grandson. However, upon recognizing in the young man traits that resemble those of her late grandson, Alcira finds herself unable to commit the crime. She lets him go, but not before forcing him to confront the moral weight of his actions, which leads the soldier to acknowledge the guilt he had long buried beneath a mask of indifference and frivolity. Once alone again, Alcira decides to break the silence she had kept since her grandson’s murder and understands that, despite everything, the time has come to speak out and demand justice.
